PDP Dep. Nat. Chair (North): Why We Are Backing Sen. Nazif - Bauchi Elders, Stakeholders

Bauchi State elders and stakeholders have thrown their weight behind Senator Sulaiman Mohammed Nazif as the right person for the Peoples Democratic Party Deputy National Chairman (North).

Recall that the previous occupant, Senator Gamawa Babayo, who was suspended by the party leadership over allegations of dereliction of duty and anti-party activities, had also defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), making the position vacant.

Senator Nazif, it was gathered received the backing of the elders and stakeholders because he is cool-headed and will be loyal to the state governor, Senator Bala Mohammed.

The elders, it was further gathered,  have distance themselves from the aspiration of Senator Abdul Ningi, another party member, who it was learnt, was interested in the position.

Explaining why they are backing Nazif, the elders said they don't want any conflict of interest in the state, adding that peace in Bauchi is paramount.

Speaking with our correspondent, one of the elders said that they don't want a repeat of what happened in Adamawa in the days of Alhaji Bamaga Tukur as National Chairman of the party and Murtala Nyako as the governor of the state under the platform of the party.

The elder, who spoke with our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, added that the crisis of interest between Tukur and Nyako almost tore the party apart then, adding that any form of distraction in Bauchi must be averted.

He said: "We are not supporting any other person except Nazif because he is cool-headed and besides we don't want a repeat of what took place in Adamawa and other places where party leaders contend power with a sitting  governor.

"We are not against others wanting to occupy the position of the Deputy National Chairman (North) of the party, but we don't want a situation where after elections, the elected officer will be contending with the governor. We want peace in our state."
