Let Us Join Hands To Tackle Malaria - Banigo

Rivers State Deputy Governor, Dr. Mrs. Ipalibo Harry Banigo says all hands must be on deck to tackle the malaria scourge in Africa.

Dr. Banigo stated this in a good will message from the Government House in Port Harcourt on Saturday, 24th April 2021 to commemorate the year 2021 World Malaria Day.

According to the Deputy Governor, malaria is preventable if we all take responsibility to keep our environment clean, get rid of stagnant water which is the breeding ground for mosquitoes, ensure we sleep under insecticide treated bed nets and take the right medication when we fall ill.

Dr. Banigo said under the watch of Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike the prevalence rate of malaria in the State has reduced drastically to 11%, noting that this is way below the national prevalence rate of 23%.

The Deputy Governor who attributed the success story to the State Government’s deliberate efforts to upgrade health facilities for the better treatment of malaria, as well as the provision of equipment to ensure prompt testing before treatment, as stipulated by the National Malaria Guidelines.

Dr.  Banigo, who said Rivers State is the 5th best State in the Country in Malaria Control, disclosed that since the inception of the Governor Wike led Administration the State has continued to make progress in Malaria prevention and control, noting that in 2016, Rivers State was the best performing State, South- South in the Annual Progamme Managers Review Meeting.

She also said the investiture of Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike as Grand Ambassador of Malaria Elimination in 2018, as well as the recognition of the State as the most innovative State in the 2018 World Malaria Day commemoration speaks volumes.

It would be recalled that the 25th of April each year is set aside to commemorate the World Malaria Day.

The theme for 2021 World Malaria Day is “Zero Malaria- Draw the Line against Malaria”
