COVID-19: Edo discharges 51 more patients, records two new deaths as confirmed cases reach 1874

The Edo State Government has announced the recovery and discharge of 51 more coronavirus (COVID-19) patients who have tested negative for the virus and cleared from the state’s isolation centres to reunite with the society.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Patrick Okundia, who disclosed this to journalists in Benin City, said the state has recorded 24 new confirmed cases and two more COVID-19-related deaths, adding that while  13 cases were confirmed at the Irrua Specialist Hospital (ISTH) laboratory, the remaining 11 were tested at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) laboratory.

Decrying the alarming spate of community spread of the virus, the commissioner urged residents to support the government's efforts at containing the pandemic by complying with all guidelines against the spread of the virus.

According to him, “Edo State has now recorded a total of 1874 confirmed cases, 8049 suspected cases, 1150 discharged persons and 62 deaths.”

Okundia, however reassured residents that the  Governor Godwin Obaseki-led state government remains committed to containing the pandemic across all communities in the state and protecting Edo people.

The commissioner further warned against the submission of wrong information, including names, addresses and phone contacts, by residents during sample collection for testing, adding that it was threatening the government’s efforts to contain the pandemic and ensure the health and well-being of the people.

Okundia said there was no need for people to resist testing for COVID-19 or give fake information during the exercise as early detection and treatment increase one's chances of survival.

The commissioner added, “We urge you to comply with all government directives, aimed at ensuring the health and safety of all residents. Stay at home and observe social distancing and other precautionary measures against the spread of the disease, including regular hand washing with soap under running water, and use alcohol-based hand sanitisers. Cover your mouth and nose properly when sneezing and/or coughing.”
